Being the first book of the trilogy, this book also, like many others in the same genre, has to be unique to stand out, and it definitely is. Red Rising is about a dystopian society which is divided into many factions based on their colors, on Mars. Also, it is about Darrow, a boy who wants to change it all single-handedly.
I find the best part about this book is the first few chapters. It was gripping. Brown successfully wrote one of the saddest and painful beginnings I’ve ever read. After that, it ran in a similar tone of Hunger Games. Then, the end was also spectacular with enough twists for you to go and pick up the sequel.
I will definitely recommend this book to those who once liked to read young adult fantasies but stopped when they grew up as they thought they should read more ‘sophisticated’ and ‘grown-up’ kind of novels. Red rising will give you the excitement of reading ‘Percy Jackson’ as well as a sense of learning like ‘1984’.
I rated Red Rising 4/5 on Goodreads.
