A Homage to IMDb

The Greatest internet movie database in the World

I don’t know if it is or it’s not, it is for me.

IMDb is my best friend, my constant companion, my man Friday. Whenever I get bored, I found myself checking out random movies, TV series or actors in them. It’s generally a spiral from which I don’t want to come out. I have friends who open google to check if their internet connection is working, I open IMDb.

Those who don’t know about it, which is highly unlikely, let me quote Wikipedia,

“The Internet Movie Database (abbreviated IMDb) is an online database of information related to films, television programs and video games, including cast, production crew, fictional characters, biographies, plot summaries, trivia and reviews, operated by IMDb.com, Inc., a subsidiary of Amazon.com.”

Its much more than this to me.

When I first got to know about it, I asked my friend, “Will I be able to watch movies on it?” He said off course not! It’s a database, and I was like, don’t waste my time.

But I sat one day rating movies just to see how many I have seen and it took me hours. In the end I was proud of myself and mesmerised by all the features that IMDb has to offer. I started writing reviews, sharing content, posting check-ins that I know none of my friends will see. I did that because it gave me joy.

After that it became an important part of my movie going experience. I used to check ratings of every newly released movies. I used to show it to my friends as a kind of proof that a movie is doing great and we should go check it out. I still blindly believe it.

Even now I continuously follow the Top 250 list, news section, trivia and goofs, even bottom 100 list (I don’t know why, maybe just to see how many of them I have seen). Now these lists are like my mission. I have to complete them.

I call myself an ardent movie follower not because I watch a lot of movies, I have met people who have watched much more than me, but because I generally have a lot to discuss about movies in a conversation. The fact that I follow IMDb is one of the reason for that.

So, this blog I am dedicating to my favourite website which has been an important part of my everyday routine since these last 5 years. If I say it like this, “favourite website”, it seems very trivial but for me, it’s not just a website.
