FLASH FICTION FOR ASPIRING WRITERS

Week of May 23, 2017

This week’s photo prompt is provided by Louise with The Storyteller’s Abode. Thank you, Louise!

“Stacie! Don’t go close to the water!”, shouted Jack. Stacie, his daughter, was busy taking selfies near the shore.

“She’s 16 years old, Jack, I think she can handle herself. Just enjoy yourself. I don’t remember the last time we sat like this.”, said Martha. Their 5-year-old Sam was throwing stones in the water. Jack held Martha’s hand, took a deep breath and relaxed.

“What took us so long to do this?”, asked Jack.

“We waited for Sam. I don’t know why it took so long for him to come into our life.”, said Martha. “Stacie is fine. But Sam is our own……..”, Jack was interrupted by Martha, “Where is Stacie?”

Jack looked around, “It’s okay, she’ll be nearby.”

Martha said, “But what if she is not?”

Jack said, “Well then it’s good that she is adopted.” Martha nodded.

Stacie was watching her parents from behind a tree. The smile on her face was replaced by horror when she realized her parents weren’t joking. She knew now why everything changed after Sam was born.
