“I’m sorry ma’am, you’re not allowed inside”, said the guard at the hostel gate of one of the most prestigious college of the states.

“I guess this is it.”, said Rory to his mother.

“Are you sure you have everything you need?”, said Martha.

Rory knew that his mother can start crying any minute now. “I’m sure. Also, it’s just 20 minutes drive from home.”

“Yes, but it’s your first time away from home.” She was more nervous than Rory.

“I know mom, but this college is great”

“Yes, it is, isn’t it? But you wanted to go to the other one right? The one which is far away?”

“Yeah but this one is just as good. Anyway, they rejected me so, no chance there.”

“Their loss,” Martha said with tears in her eyes. She kissed his forehead and they bid farewell.

Little did she know that Rory got in the other college too but declined the admission, to stay close to his family. He does not regret his decision at all.

    1. Thanks! I had my mother in my mind when I was writing this. I remember how sad (and happy) she was when I was leaving for college.
