The footsteps can be heard now. They are coming for us. But we will sing this song till we die, that’s what papa told mama. I overheard. I do not know why someone would hate mother when she sings so well. Papa says that it’s because she is jew. I don’t know why that is a problem.

They think I am too small to understand but I know that we are part of a war. I heard him saying that no one can exit the country. There is no escaping from our fate. Even with all the money that we have. Papa already sold all the painting but one for food.

So, I know I will die today. But I will die singing with my mother while papa plays the piano. They will remember us, our face, because we will not be afraid. Our death will be for a greater cause.

The story (151 words) is a fictional account of a family living in Germany during the Second World War. We can only just imagine what happened during those dark times. This prompt inspired me to write something about a child who sees the horror of war but stands fearlessly awaiting her own death because she has the power of love. A power which she shares with her parents.
